“You and I” is probably Lady Gaga’s best work to date. Unlike most of Gaga’s work, “You and I” is honest and subdued; it’s no wonder audiences loved this song ever since Lady Gaga sang it a few months ahead of Born This Way‘s release. I’m so glad to see that it’s getting the single treatment.
The accompanying video for “You and I” premiered yesterday, two days ahead of schedule. Just like any other Gaga videos, “You and I” is heavy on imagery, which may or may not cohesively made sense depending on who you ask. Here are some things that stood out for me regarding this video:
The light blue (or is it green?) wig looks great on Gaga — a thousand times better than her bald or super blonde looks!
The main storyline — which involves Gaga turning into a mermaid — is confusing, interesting, and kinda sexy. That said, I don’t think I’d stay with a guy if he turns me into a mermaid.
Lady Gaga doesn’t have the right features to pull off being a boy, unfortunately. She’s not that pretty as a man.
Gaga looks fabulous in the opening and closing scenes. The make up is amazing! This look is crazy and high fashion at the same time.
The corn field scenes remind me a lot of the movie Signs (starring Mel Gibson). Not a good thing!
Finally, I wish Gaga opted not to have some dancing parts in this video. I think the dancing parts take away from the song’s message. Gaga usually sings this song with just her piano, and that would have been more appropriate here.
Overall, the “You and I” video is a cohesive and interesting piece. I like it. The video for “Edge of Glory” was a hot mess, so it’s nice to see Lady Gaga bounce back. I’d even go as far as saying that this is her best video since “Bad Romance”. The drama, the cinematography, the fashions — Lady Gaga brought everything she had in this one.
